Eclectus parrots are known to be in the top 3 for their talking ability. They are sexually dimorphic, which means you can visually sex males and females. Males have various shades of green, and candy corn beaks. Their beaks do not fully change to the candy corn color until they are close to 1 year of age. Females are shades of red, blue, lavender, and purple depending on the type of species. The Solomon Island females are usually the red and blue and have a blue circle around their eyes just like eye liner, where the Vosmaeri are more of the red with lavender and purple , and have yellow tip tail feathers. The Vosmaeri Eclectus are a little larger than the Solomon island eclectus and some say that the Solomon Island eclectus are considered to be the quietest and most docile. I have noticed no major difference in the personalities of the 2 species.
Eclectus parrots make great apartment birds due to they perfer to talking verse screaming. They also have no feather dust because they have oil glands rather than dust glands for preening.
Another major plus to the eclectus parrot is that they are not usually one person birds, as there is always exception to the rules, they are a great pet for all the family to own. Eclectus's are very affectionate and playful. They love to climb and hang as you can see with JiJi who is pictured above. They do require a minium of 10 hours of sleep.
