Cockatiels are very intelligent, social, and make great companion birds. They are second most poplar to the parakeet. Their name derives from the Dutch word "kakatielje" which means little cockatoo. They can learn to do tricks, and they do have the ability to mimic like other parrots but best know for their whistling ability. Females and Males both can mimic, talk, and do tricks , however, males are know to be more vocal.
Cage requirements are atleast 5/8- 3/4 bar spacing. To have a wider cage is better than taller as cockatiels are ground feeders and spend a great deal of time on the bottom of the cage. They love toys espeically mirrors. Tiels also require 10-12 hours of sleep and they never seem to get up in the mornings on the wrong side of the bed.
I personally feel that these make great pets for first time bird owners. They are affectionate and with a handfed cockatiel they are very easy to handle. Noise levels are very moderate as they perfer to sing and whistle rather than squaking.
